Originally Lucas wanted to make the Indiana Trilogy keep going back in
time. What I mean is that each successive movie was suppose to take
place before the last one. So that Raiders would have been chronologically
the last movie and (if they had done this) Crusade would have been the first.

Hopefully that makes sense.
As far as Indy's comments about not believing in "magic and hocus-pocus"
Since we didn't see very much "magic" in temple and the fact that this is
two years later plenty of time for things to get a little hazy in the memory and
pull a Scully and rationalize things. Besides would you rather have had Indy go
"Marcus, you're right there are very powerful forces here. I think I had better
stay and do that lecture monday."
