I've got two televisions at my place: a 50' and a 14'. While I do love letterboxing, the smaller height would make things indecipherable on my smaller box. Pan and Scan does have its place.

1) DVD will first be bought by movie fanatics (no one else will pay that much money just yet).
2) Movie fanatics want letterboxing.
3) DVD has letterboxing, to appease the fans.
Indy DEFINITELY needs a letterbox edition, though. I've heard that in the Well of Souls, you can see heiroglyphs of R2D2 and C3PO -- only in the letterbox format. I'm also sure that the mine chase scene in Temple of Doom would look much better, just like the Leap of Faith and circus train scenes in Last Crusade.
