Just because he was an archeologist doesn't mean he wasn't a soldier as well. If you'll remember, several hundreds of thousands of men fought in WWII. teachers, factory workers, farmers, and I'm sure at least a few archeologists (since many had no choice because of the draft).
Anyway, every thing I've heard about Indy 4 I take with a grain of salt. ANyway, the story this post referred to isn't that good. but who knows what a good filmmaker could do with it.
