: Considering that being a Jedi runs within blood lines would make this a plausible explanation, how would it run within generations otherwise? It was passed from Anakin to Luke and Leia somehow. The Force is still a mystical energy field that surrounds everything, but you have to be within the Jedi bloodline in order to sense it or use it. This was a much better explanation than to say that Jedi are some kind of alien species or something- which in my opinion is more Trek-ish than this.

There simply doesn't need to be an explaination. The Force clearly runs from parent to child because Luke and Leia have it from Anakin, so that's already established. We don't need midi-chlorians, we don't need Jedi to be aliens, we don't need _any_explaination for the Force. It's a mystical energy field and that's enough.

The midi-chlorians are obviously some kind of set-up for the coming Clone Wars, but again, I don't think Lucas needed to establish midi-chlorians to make the cloning of Jedi feasible.
