I think it's most likely that in the finalised version of the film Indy left his stuff on board Katanga's ship. He didn't have time to go back to his room once he left to investigate why 'the engines had stopped'.

Although the sequels were made later, we are also led to believe that it's the same hat, as Indy never seems to lose it regardless of the circumstances (the spiked pit in 'Temple' and the tank scene in 'Crusade').

However, speculation is all I have to go on as the book mentions one thing and the film implies another.
