The book stories are licensed from Lucas, which, theoretically, makes them officially a "part" of the trilogy.
I don't want to start a "you're wrong-I'm right" war here, mind you. I just try an' enjoy Indiana Jones, and the books gave me a whole new outlook about our favorite archaeologist. When I first saw the trilogy, I was interested in Indy, but only to a certain point (but enough to make me adopt the 'Indiana' tag before my name when I was in high school). However, after reading the books, I came to see the man before he became the hero we know and love; and I came to see what drove him to do the things he does, his passions, his motivations, and his humanity. the books gave him an added dimension, and made him more human.
And in the end, that's what we all want, isn't it?
Till then.
