I think the trend in both Spielberg's and Lucas'film demonstrates that they have lost touch with the original magic. Spielberg especially seems to show a contempt for audiences that are more interested in action than art (Jurassic Park movies are a good example)
By the way, if I had to choose a Star Wars movie to flush down the toilet, it wouldn't be TPM, which was in my opinion pretty watchable. It would be, without hesitation, Return of the Jedi.

Also, I don't think we can discredit the YIJC movies (despite the fact that the Old Indy character is being edited out of them, calling into question his place in the grand history) In theory at least, Lucas will be using those as his template for the character when the next movie is made, since he obviously considers it part of the series.
