I know with Star Trek, the novels are not to contradict the established TV/movie continuity as it stands when published. However, the TV/movie writers are under no obligation to acknowledge book content... hence the contradictions in the "Mirror Universe" stories.
The books must acknowledge eachother, except where film continuity is concerned. It's sort of a tossup at that point, but favoring the films.
It would be harder to do with Indy, because we don't have the option of saying "It's an alternate timeline that Kirk created when he sneezed while on Earth in the 1980's in that whale movie!"
But still...

: The movies should follow the continuity of the movies, the novels should not contridict the films but should be free to contridict other novels by other writers, etc.
