: : How well do HJ or Stetson fedoras hold up to rain, especially drizzle kind of rain?

: : Many thanks.

: Regarding Stetsons, in a drizzle or light rain, no problems. If in a steady constant downpour, look out. I had one experience with a T of D fedora that I had worn for MANY years that in the middle of one torrential rain storm, the dye actually began to release from the felt, causing a trail of dye stained water to roll down between my eyes. I thought my kids were going to die from laughter when they saw this happen. I, on the other hand, was not that amused at the time. It may have just been that particular hat too, as I have two other Stetsons that I have worn in snow and rain storms and experienced nothing remotely like this. It was not a fun experience. My girls thought it was. Regards. Michaelson

Funny story! I am an avid back packer, although I am now doing it less often. There have been numerous times over the years that I have been caught out in unfavorable weather conditions. Even with poncho and hat I usually get soaked before I can get my shelter up. I have noticed that my felt hats usually shrink, even when dried naturally. I have also noticed that the dye in the hat bleeds somewhat, especially after the first soaking. It bleeds less the next time, and so on. Of course the coloring of the hat gets lighter. I honestly don't know if this bleeding is the dye or the colored powder the hatters use to even out the color of the hat. Maybe a combination of both. I now use Scotchguard and it does make a difference. This stuff won't keep your head dry in a downpour that lasts for an extended period of time, but it will keep you dry for the time it takes to get a shelter up. I have also used this stuff on my White repro, because I certainly don't want to get it wet. One other thing about felt hats. Even when wet they will keep your head warm, just like wool. Steve
