How does Sallah know about Marion?

Something that has always puzzled me: how does Sallah know that Marion is dead? When Sallah's children help Indy out of the bar, Indy says "Marion's dead." Sallah replies, "Yes, I know. Life goes on Indy! There is the proof!" How could he have possibly have known that Marion was on the truck that exploded if Indy had to run all over creation to keep up with the basket????
