: : If Short Round is from Shanghai why is he always speaking in Cantonese?

:
: Good one. You got me, and I don't want to resort to any speculation. Lucas' script writers for Shorty's dialogues are probably of Hong Kong descent. Besides, Ke Huy Chuan is from Vietnam, and he has probably mingled with the Cantonese-speaking Asian community in America, so it might be more natural for him to use Cantonese instead of Mandarin.

: "Ngo umm tong lei wan lo, Play with you, no fun..." - Short Round
: Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom

OK. Yeah, technically Shorty should be speaking Shanghainese. But Ke Huy Quan is Cantonese( He was born in Vietnam, but he is Chinese). And I do believe Quan made up most of the cantonese lines himself.
