Lucasfilm's portrayals of Eee-Vill politicos (e.g., Nazi scum, Imperial scum, and probably others) probably have sartorial roots in Famous Fascist Empires of History. Roman legionary forces were noted as particularly nicely outfitted, and the Nazis drew inspiration from this as well as Art Deco fashion trends, Teutonic death/war symbols, and the machine-worshipping aspects of modernity and its bastard-child futurism. UNDOUBTEDLY, SW Imperial uniforms and Vader's duds were influenced by the Nazi/futurist example.
I would also direct interested parties to Susan Sontag's essay on fascist fashions (available in her collection "Under the Sign of Saturn", I believe), in which she explores the relationship between fascist material and body culture, particularly clothing and accessories, and sado-masochism, and totalitarian politics.
Truly it is a delightful and stimulating read.
Academically,
