I looked it up in the novel, and Indy did indeed swim away from the sub and into shore. In the book the cavern is described as having more soldiers present than "one of Hitler's Nuremburg extravaganzas". I also read one other curious thing in the novel. We all know, in the film, Indy did not appear to have his whip as he boarded the sub. In the book he did not have his gunbelt at the time and had his whip wrapped and tied around his waist. Maybe we all want to take a closer look at the scene?
