"Found objects" are easy to find at the time the prop master is making the prop. He takes something he has plenty of at the time. In the case of Luke Skywalker's lightsaber, the flashgun used was sold with the Graflex 4X5 camera. That was one of the most popular press cameras of it's day. The flash was very unique and did not check on. Most liked the Highland guns, like the one Darth Vader's is based on. Although the 4X5 Graflex camera had staying power, the guns ended up in the used box at the camera store. They were easy to find until Star Wars came out. Also in the first film an old 70's calculator magnifying lens was used on the side of the sabre. In '76 when SW was made it was easy to find too. Also things that bombed in sales and ended up on sale or salvage racks are prime for prop builders. Perhaps the coffee maker was a flop and was a bargin at the time. You don't choose top dollar popular items unless you have to. Better to use the discards.
