Shoulder Bag Strap Buckle & Alteration Questions

I've always been unhappy with my Noel Howard bag strap. I think the leather's pretty sucky and don't get me started on the buckle. Anyway, I found a pretty cool lookin' buckle somewhere and now I wanna use it as a replacement for the ugly one on my strap.

My only problem is popping open the "chicago screws". The screws that Noel Howard uses are the ones that you hammer together and they seem pretty strong. Has anyone else found a way to detach these screws? Is there an easy and simple way to do it?
