What you've mentioned about the "golden era" reminds of something my younger cousins said recently. I showed them several early 80's movies, i.e. gremlins, e.t., and explorers, and they thought they looked terrible!! They seem to believe cgi, and reject models and optical effects, which I've always thought to be far superior.

one of them even mentioned that star wars looked fake. i have to wonder if the type of effects we grow up with forever dominate our destiny, in terms of what we think looks real. Maybe after massive exposure our brains will become wired to cgi...

p.s. I thought the cgi in tomb raider looked good, while the wire work looked terrible.
