He was pretty typical of guys of his generation -- he saw a job that needed doing, or a wrong that needed righting, and went out and got it done. 'Raiders' especially is a great parable about what a little determination can do. I think Indy pretty much lived for his work (or his hobby -- treasure hunting; I guess his work as a professor disgusted him so much that he had to resort to climbing out of windows at times to escape it).
