Leather thickness/weight variable?

I had a FS Expedition in lamb for a few weeks. I ordered it from stock just to try on and decide if I wanted a FS one or to give Wested one more shot. It was lambskin, and had a fine tooth brass zipper, which was wavy as can be. The FS Civil A2 I actually ended up buying has the same size brass zipper, but is goatskin. The zipper is straight as can be, which leads me to conclude that sandwiching the zipper between two layers of leather (i.e.-facings & exterior shell) solves the wavy zipper and edge roll back problem I saw with the lamb Expo. Both my Westeds, post and pre improved, had zipper facings.
