Though it's been listed that the British sizing seems to be a bit smaller than US, in my experience they tend to be pretty close in terms of off the rack US sizing, though I'm with you....I also wear a 44, though a regular and not a long, and have also worn a 42 regular. The 42 fit me MUCH better, but if I wanted to wear a sweater underneath it, no way. It's perfect for only a shirt, but the 42 will be a bit snug otherwise. You need to decide if you plan to wear any heavier clothing beneath in winter. If so, the 44 is the way you want to go. Hope this adds to the consideration. Regards. Michaelson
