The whips in the movie weren't steel wire reinforced. I asked David about this during one of my numerous visits with him. He told me they didn't do anything special for the whips that they produced. Consider the fact that he supplied some 30 whips for these movies ought to tell you that the studio would likely use one for a particular scene, and then it would be ruined.

Zorro was the movie in which a steel cable was used for swinging, with plaiting over it to make it look like a whip. The studio asked for a 25' whip and got it. The problem was that it couldn't be handled well due to the length, hence the cable.
