Here's another theory: Maybe Belloq is right and the Ark is a "radio for speaking to God", but the way the tabernacle is setup (see link) seems so precise. Maybe the other holy objects somehow interact with the Ark. Without the proper alignment and the other objects perhaps Sallah and Indy are safe...
