Some DVD players are actually 'smart' enought (like a Playstation 2) that know's that it's going through a VCR, and doesn't play through it. This is yet another copy protection scheme, to prevent you from copying DVDs to tape....

Trust me, we tried this last Xmas and my aunt's house.
