The Ark was stolen by invaders from the temple in Jerusalem, never to be seen again. It has been said that it was taken into Africa. Egypt or Kenya being the most likely places. Therefore, any snakes or statues are there because the people who stole the ark put them there. Not the Hewbrews.

: 2nd. The Ark, or better yet the contents of the Ark, The Ark carried the ten commandments in it.

In the film they reach into the ark and find that all there is left is dust. Not sand, as is commonly believed. The two stone tablets have been pulverised in their home. So the tablets are there, but only just.

: 3rd. The death of the guys that looked into the ark. This is the most interesting part. After the Death of Christ the Ark was no longer dangerous to anyone who touched it. True before the death of Christ the ark was only allowed to be touched by the Priests of the 12 tribes of Iseral.

The ark wasn't around when Christ was on earth. When he was born, died and resurrected it was hidden somewhere else (see #1). The ark was lethal; it only killed sinners (everyone) who entered its sanctuary. But since Jesus took our sins on the cross with him the ark would be rendered useless. However, we can still make it deadly for fictional license. Besides! Those Nazis had it coming!
