European release

My understanding is that the production company which saw the initial cut of the movie (with Ash travelling too far forward into the future) deemed it too depressing. They didn't get the joke that Ash typically does stupid things and this was just one more example. It's their money, so I guess they get the final say. Anyways, they tacked on the S-Mart bookends and theatrically released the first ending in Europe only. I guess you can get it on video now. Interestingly, the Dark Horse comic adaptation, which was produced during post production before the execs had their way with the film, has this little seen ending.
