...which I feel the other 2 films failed to capture was the sense of mystery and intrigue that surrounded the hunt for the lost ark. To me this is typified by the scene that opens with Indy peering into the Cairo night through Imam's wrought-iron screen door. We sense his apprehension; Marion is (we presume) dead, Indy now knows that that there are forces out there that seek to stop him. Still unsettled, he turns away, whereupon Imam's servant boy appears, then leaves for a moment. The screen door immedately creaks open, and the disreputable one-eyed character slinks in and pours a vial of evil-looking liquid over the dates. He scuttles away just as the boy returns, puzzled by the open door. It's a wonderfully moody scene; wordless, suspenseful, economical, and entirely satisfying.
