I suggest picking up a copy of Graham Hancock's "The Sign and The Seal." "Isn't that about the Ark of the Covenant?", you ask. Yes, it is. But there is plenty of evidence that Hancock uncovers to suggest that the grail is an allegory for the Ark. The term "gral" means "stone", and some of the earliest depictions of the grail show it as a cup containing a stone, much like the Ark would have contained the two stone tablets of the law. Hancock draws upon many of the sources mentioned in some of the other responses to your post, like the works of Chretien de Troyes and Wolfram von Eschenbach. Essentially, what Hancock concludes is that the grail never existed as the cup we envision today. But don't take my word for it; draw your own conclusions. It's worthwhile reading, especially for the Indyfan!
