Indy Saving The Big Guy in TOD

They've been playing TOD lately on AMC. Well you know the conveyor belt fight with the big guy. It looks to me that at the end Indy is trying to save him! Watch it and tell me what you think. The guy gets his scarf caught and then is getting pulled into the grinder. He screams and Indy tries to pull him, then he tries to support him with the rope and pulley!

I found this a little strange since the guy was just trying to kill him......

The only way i can make any sense out of it, is that Indy didnt really think he was evil, and just needed to be saved by fire.....
