That way, H.F. could play Indy in the first half. The rugged adventurer is getting old and can't do as much as he used to.
Then in the second half, S.P.F. as a newly restored hero. (This would set things up for Indy V and VI where the Nazis are replaced by Cold War commies.)
Well, maybe the story is a little farfetched, but that's why I'm not working for Lucas (yet).
