I think he was influenced by Fedora because of his determination to complete his objectives(stop at nothing to achieve your goals), and with Fedora handing over the Hat, showed Indy that he had that same determination inside of him, later adopting the same appearance because Fedora somewhat became his role model in life, a sort of father figure(since his own father paid him little attention), thus ensues the rest of the story of the Last Crusade, centering on the mending of their relationship and his own father becoming the father figure.
I also believe that his sole purpose for retrieving the artifacts and placing them in museums was not for the benefit of the museum itself, but for educational benefit(his desire for others to learn, being the professor he is). Once again, his determination for the benefit of higher education taking precedence over what we now consider grave robbing.
