I, too, experienced that, but only had one of the wooden shims fall out of a heel, which I had reglued by a cobbler near by, and have had no problems since. My heels are getting pretty run down too, but this is after daily wear of 13 months. Not to shabby considering. You must walk a LOT more than I do, but I agree totally with your observations.
