That was actually supposed to be an extra small scene for comic relief. Speilburg canceled it amoung two other similar scenes.
Good choice. I forget the details of what happened. I think he trips over the guy and there is a small funny moment.

For the record, many believe the scene in which Indy shoots the swordsman in the street was an impromptu action. Actually, it was planned that way....the only original comedy relief that made it in the film.

I know this sounds odd, but it's true.
